Additionally, Walmart, Target, CVS Health, Kroger Co., Meijer, and Walgreens have earned spots on the 2021 Disability Equality Index Best Places to Work list. These companies have demonstrated their commitment to factors such as employment practices, community engagement, and culture and leadership. Timothy Williams, vice president of diversity and inclusion at Meijer, credits passionate team members for helping the company grow and innovate.
However, despite the higher employment rates among workers with disabilities in these industries, about 30% of them are employed part-time. This rate is double that of workers without disabilities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) also reports that workers with disabilities are more likely to work part-time for economic reasons. Many people with disabilities rely on public benefits systems such as Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid, which have low-income limits. While full-time employment may provide a higher income, it may risk access to these crucial payments.
Furthermore, individuals with disabilities are less likely to have attained a bachelor’s degree compared to those without disabilities. The higher a worker’s education level, the lower their chance of being unemployed. To address this gap and create more opportunities for marginalized young adults with disabilities to join the workforce, the Labor Department has opened up $69 million in grants for the creation of programs.
Overall, while there are industries that are more inclusive of workers with disabilities, there are still challenges to be addressed in terms of part-time employment, access to public benefits, and educational attainment.
