BMW has recently introduced the new X5 Protection VR6, a high-security SUV designed to provide enhanced safety for its occupants. The “VR6” in the name refers to the car’s ballistic and blast resistance rating, which is achieved through the use of safety glass and an armoured passenger compartment. This compartment is constructed using high-strength steel tailored to the car’s body, providing protection around the doors, side frame, roof, and bulkhead.
In addition to these safety features, the X5 Protection VR6 also includes an armoured partition in its luggage compartment and an aluminium splinter guard in its underbody. The vehicle is equipped with a self-sealing fuel tank that ensures occupants can make a getaway even if the tank has been hit by a bullet.
Customers have the option to further enhance the vehicle’s protection by selecting extended underbody armouring and additional armouring for the roof. Despite these added safety measures, BMW has ensured that the armoured version of the X5 maintains a similar appearance to a regular X5, both externally and internally, offering discreet protection for those who desire it.
For those who require additional security features, the car can be customized with flashing LED lights in the radiator grille, roof-mounted light beacons, an acoustic signalling system, and a roof antenna with an additional receiver for a digital two-way radio. Optional flag poles are also available for official occasions.
The BMW X5 Protection VR6 comes exclusively in a four-seater layout. Despite its armoured design, occupants can still enjoy the same amount of space and comfort as in a regular BMW X5. The armoured SUV offers a 500-litre luggage capacity and a maximum permissible payload of 475kg.
Under the hood, the X5 Protection VR6 is powered by a 523bhp 4.4-litre V8 engine, delivering peak torque of 750Nm. With this power, the SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 210km/h.
The BMW X5 Protection VR6, along with the BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection, will make its world premiere at the IAA Mobility 2023.
