“AI-Powered Security Solution by Barracuda Networks Successfully Thwarts Hackers in 2023”
– Barracuda Managed XDR’s AI-based pattern analysis detected and neutralized thousands of high-risk incidents within a massive pool of nearly one trillion IT events.
– Artificial intelligence proves its effectiveness in recognizing patterns and flagging anomalies, making it a powerful tool against attackers using compromised accounts.
During the first half of 2023, Barracuda Networks, Inc. achieved significant success with their AI-powered security solution. Barracuda Managed XDR’s pattern analysis, driven by artificial intelligence, successfully identified and neutralized numerous high-risk incidents out of a vast pool of almost one trillion IT events. The AI technology demonstrated its capability to recognize patterns of normal activity and identify anomalies, making it a formidable tool against attackers exploiting compromised accounts with valid credentials.
One notable detection during this period was the identification of “Impossible Travel” logins. This detection occurs when a user logs into a cloud account from two locations that are geographically distant and couldn’t be feasibly reached within such a short time frame. In an incident shared by Merium Khalid, Director of SOC Offensive Security at Barracuda, a user logged into their Microsoft 365 account from California and, just thirteen minutes later, from Virginia. The speed required to achieve this travel would exceed 10,000 miles per hour, indicating unauthorized access by an attacker. The user promptly reset their passwords and logged out the rogue user from all active accounts upon being alerted by Barracuda.
Another significant detection involved identifying anomalies in account activities. These anomalies could include rare login times, atypical file access, or excessive account creations. Such anomalies may indicate malware infections, phishing attempts, or insider threats.
Barracuda’s AI-based security solution also detected communication with known malicious artifacts. This detection points to interactions with IP addresses, domains, or files that have been flagged as red flags. Such communication could signal a malware infection or a phishing attack, requiring immediate quarantine.
Merium Khalid emphasized the importance of AI in security but also warned against its misuse. To protect organizations and employees from evolving attack tactics, she advised implementing comprehensive security measures, including robust authentication, regular employee training, and software updates. These measures should be supported by full visibility and continuous monitoring across networks, applications, and endpoints.
Overall, Barracuda Networks’ AI-powered security solution has demonstrated its effectiveness in detecting and thwarting high-risk incidents in 2023. This breakthrough development highlights the power of artificial intelligence in the fight against hackers and reinforces the need for robust security measures.
